Color Your World

Through the years I have come to realize that most people have a very difficult time choosing paint colors for their home. I feel in most cases that people "over think" the decision, which can then lead to indecision. I also think people believe that they can't afford to make the wrong choice. I'm not sure why this is, as it is only paint, and after all, can easily be changed.

Quite honestly, I beleive the best way to select paint is to hire an interior designer like myself who can see your home through fresh eyes. Regardless, I strongly suggest that whatever colors are up for consideration, you paint samples on poster board, and leave them taped to the wall for several days. In this way you can see how the colors look throughout the day and night. If you still like a specific color by the end of the third day, then you have found one that works for you.

Contrary to what many people believe, your choice of color does not always need to match a color that exists in the room already. Sometimes the best choice is what I call a "background" color. This is a neutral color that works well with just about any other color, and enhances what you already have in the room. Often a background color is good to use throughout an entire floor, instead of changing colors from room to room. Another effective strategy is using a different shade of this same background color in an adjoining room or rooms. One of the most utilized collection of background colors is the taupe family.

In choosing colors, there are many great sources to draw inspiration from, and one of these is the great outdoors. Many have been inspired by fall foliage and flower gardens. Another good source is fabric ... furniture, drapery, and even clothing. If there is a fabric you love because of the colors in it, then using one of those colors for your walls can be a good choice. A favorite painting is also a good place to look for favorite colors. All of these sources can help you in determining the direction you might take with color choices.

So, remember to take the anxiety out of your decision. Relax, and realize that paint is very flexible. If you make a regrettable choice, you can always paint over it.
